GLP-1 Receptor agonist national shortage
There are ongoing supply chain issues affecting the availability of the GLP-1 receptor analogues (GLP-1RA’s) Examples are Ozempic and Victoza. This has caused a national shortage. We are aware that many people living with diabetes will find the current situation difficult and will not be able to get hold of their GLP-1RA medication.
The situation is not expected to resolve until mid-2024.
This is outside the control of the practice and also your local chemist.
It is likely that you will need to consider alternative glucose lowering therapies in discussion with your diabetes team.
We have been advised not to switch between different GLP-1 medications due to overall capacity issues.
It is also not advisable to have an intermittent supply of your GLP-1, and this may be associated with increased side effects and erratic blood glucose control. This could increase your risk of diabetes related complications.
We therefore believe it is safer to consider alternative treatment options, which could include insulin.
If you are currently prescribed a GLP-1 we will discuss options with you at your next diabetes clinic appointment or at the point when you are unable to get another prescription.
Thank you for your patience during this challenging time.
